Microsoft throws its hat in the ring of eyewearables
Microsoft is reportedly sourcing parts and working on prototypes of an eyewearable device,
NHL Ducks Samsung Galaxy S3 i9300 Cases, according to the Wall Street Journal's Digits tech blog. No details about the prototype are available and Microsoft is not commenting on the report. The prototype is said to be Microsoft's answer to Google Glass, shown here in this CNET video. Glass is by far the most hyped wearable device, which is planned for consumer launch in 2014.
The development of an eyewearable fits in with Microsoft's broader strategy to play in the device space. The company's handhelds and tablets are gaining traction in the market, competing with Google, Samsung and Apple--all of which have confimed they will commercialize wearable devices. Smart watches like Samsung's Galaxy Gear are generating interest, but eyewearables have captured the public's imagination on a whole new level.
While Google is readying Glass for launch, and Samsung and Microsoft are rumored to be working on their own eyewearables, several smaller companies are also in the game. GlassUp, Recon Instruments, Telepathy, Meta and others are developing devices that resemble eyeglasses.
